Waterstones sales increased to £399.8m in the financial year ending April 2022 up from £230.9m in 2021 and £376m in 2020 and posted a £42.1m profit after taxation.
Maternity brand Seraphine looking to be taken private
The board of Seraphine is recommending shareholders accept an offer of 30p per share from Bidco. The offer values the label at around £15.3m, well down on the float value in July 2021.
The Works hails “resilient” performance
The Works saw sales up 5.7% in the 11 weeks ended 15 Jan with in-store sales up by 9.7%, although online sales declined by 14% in part due to Royal Mail strikes before Christmas.
In The Style widens losses as Christmas sales plummet 22%
In The Style sales fell 22% in the quarter to 31 Dec and now expects to make an adjusted EBITDA loss of between £4.25m and £4.75m for the year
Superdrug reports strong Christmas sales as customers return to high streets
Superdrug has posted a 16% rise in sales for the five weeks to Dec 31 after strong Christmas sales driven by a return to stores, demand for fragrance and cosmetics, and the new marketplace.
Lloyds Pharmacy to close all Sainsbury’s outlets
Lloyds Pharmacy is to close all of its 237 branches inside Sainsbury’s stores over the course of the year putting 2,000 jobs on the line.
Argos to close entire retail operation in the Republic with the loss of 580 jobs
Argos is to close its entire operation in the Republic of Ireland, the closure of the 34 stores by June will result in the loss of around 580 jobs
Hunter working with advisers to secure new financial backers
Footwear brand Hunter is reportedly working with advisers at AlixPartners on plans to secure new financial backers, almost three years after it was rescued in a £16.5m rescue deal.
Consumer confidence shows no improvement as it drops to near-historic lows
UK consumer confidence dropped again in January and showed little signs of improvement as it reached near-historic lows.
December retail sales rise but volumes fall as cost of living hits consumers
The Office for National Statistics figures for December show retail sales rose 3.3% year on year by value however, volume was down 6.1%.
Shein in talks on fundraising that would reduce valuation by £30bn

January is all about fitness and health and getting back on track after a Christmas and New Year Holidays break, plus it’s about starting to prepare for outfits and gifts for Valentine’s Day next month. But also, we’re looking forward to next season so make sure anything SS23 is flagged on your drops. Plus, as we’re mid-winter there will still be searches for anything cosy, so pyjamas, slippers, coats, hygge, winter warmers, knitwear, scarves and everything warm.
